WHAT IS 3GP?
3GP is a multimedia format. The full form is ‘Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). This technology is used mainly on the 3G mobile phones, but it can also be used on the 2G and 4G mobiles.
3GP supports audio and video media in mobile phones. Today, a large number of mobile users have 3gp format in the phones. The file extension of 3gp files is .3gp.
The 3GP media format is actually based on the ISO media format defined in ISO/IEC 14496-12, it popularly called MP4. The initial versions of the 3GP media format did not use some the MP4 features. The 3GP file format was designed to decrease the bandwidth requirements and storage for the mobile phones. 3GPP medial format was designed for GSM based mobiles.
The 3GP media format is used to store video streams as H.263 (AVC/H.264) and audio streams like AMR-NB, AMR-WB or Enhanced AAC Plus. These extensions were registered by the registration authority in ISO base file format - MP4 Family files. The storage of MP4 specific information refers to AVC and MP4 file format that are also based on the ISO base format.
It has been found that for 3gp videos, some mobile phones use the .mp4 file extension.
Device Support -
All 3G enabled mobile phones support the video recording and playback in 3GP format with varying resolution limits. Some higher end mobiles that do not have 3G capabilities can also record and playback in the 3gp format with some limitations. In the iMovie software of 2008 version, a movie expelled through the ‘Tiny’ setting is saved in the .3gp format and it can be played on an iPhone, an iPod touch, using Apple's .Mac Web Gallery service or any handset that is able to load and play the file.
Software Support –
When a 3gp movie is transferred to a computer, it can be played on Mac, Linux and Windows with MPlayer. Other programs like Media Player Classic, Totem, The KMPlayer, RealPlayer and QuickTime can also be used.
